CINCINNATI — Pierre Foods, Inc. said it will introduce a new line of more nutritious products for school cafeterias, including all-beef hamburger patties with 37% less sodium than current patties and a macaroni and cheese product made from whole grain pasta. The line, Smart Picks, will be available beginning in August, and it will include a variety of items that include one or more of the following attributes: reduced sodium; a good source of protein; zero grams of trans fat; no hydrogenated oils; made with whole grains; a good source of fiber; and reduced fat. The Smart Picks line will use U.S. Department of Agriculture-inspected, fully-cooked meats and hearth-baked bread, the company said. Pierre Foods spent more than year developing the Smart Picks’ products, and nearly 2,000 students taste-tested them.
