Ocean Nutrition buys encapsulation rights

DARTMOUTH, N.S. — Ocean Nutrition Canada has acquired the exclusive global marketing and distribution rights to GAT Food Essentials’ omega-3 fatty acid microencapsulation-emulsion technology, which will allow ONC to further expand the range of food and beverage applications for its omega-3 fatty acids sourced from fish oil, ONC said July 12. ONC also acquired all GAT’s global omega-3 fatty acid customer base, which includes customers in Australia, Europe, North America and South America.
“With GAT’s microencapsulation-emulsion technology in the same portfolio as our patented Powder-loc microencapsulation technology platform and product line, our ability to meet customer requirements across a spectrum of food applications and food processing conditions is unmatched in the industry,” said Jon Getzinger, chief sales and marketing officer for Dartmouth-based ONC.
The wowCAPS microencapsulation technology from GAT Food Essentials, Ebenfurth, Austria, stabilizes sensitive active ingredients such as oils, oil suspensions, and oil or water solubles. The microcapsules are small in size, self-emulsifying in water and in oil, and stable in applications with a pH between 3.5 and 7.5. The shell of cross-linked polymers provides a targeted release at a pH below 3.0, which makes the microencapsulated active ingredient available to the human body after consumption of a food or beverage with the ingredient in it.
