Hershey helps launch moderation program

HERSHEY, PA. — The Hershey Center for Health and Nutrition and the American Dietetic Association are introducing Moderation Nation, a national program designed to provide complimentary visits with dietitians to adult consumers.
“A.D.A.’s public opinion survey … indicates that more than half of Americans claim they need more practical information in order to eat right, and 41% don’t know or understand diet and nutrition guidelines,” said Debra Miller, director for the Hershey Center for Health and Nutrition. “This program helps people easily access registered dietitians to help them make a major impact on people’s attitudes and behaviors toward food and support balanced eating habits and better overall health.”
The program will feature on-line and face-to-face tools, including Moderation Menus and a new iPhone mobile application to help consumers understand what moderation means. Consumer interest in such a program appears to be high as an A.D.A. public opinion survey showed 61% of consumers reported an interest in diet and nutritional consultation if the cost were covered by health insurance, and studies also have shown people who receive regular nutritional counseling have better eating habits and avoid gaining weight.
The Hershey Center for Health and Nutrition will commit a half million dollars to the program initially. Consumers may visit www.TheModerationNation.com to arrange an appointment with a dietitian.
