LISLE, ILL. — Armour, a Smithfield Foods, Inc., brand, has introduced a reduced sodium pepperoni. The company said the use of a natural sodium replacer has allowed it to reduce the sodium content of pepperoni by 50% when compared with traditional products.
“We’ve found one size does not fit all as pepperoni consumers have developed strong preferences for specific sizes, forms and flavors,” said AJ Miller, brand manager with the John Morrell Food Group, a Smithfield Foods business unit. “Our lower-sodium pepperoni offers an alternative for people with healthier lifestyles while giving them the great taste of pepperoni they love.”
The new product is available in 5-oz re-sealable packages. Current distribution is limited to Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., the Meijer chain of supermarkets and other retail outlets. The company said it anticipates wider distribution in 2012.
