UTRECHT, THE NETHERLANDS — Sara Lee Corp. has acquired Expresso.Coffee, an espresso coffee business that specializes in the out-of-home, vending and bakery segments in Brazil. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

“This acquisition substantially expands the branding and consumer connection platform for our Pilao brand,” said Michiel Herkemij, chief executive officer of Sara Lee International Beverages. “Adding Expresso.Coffee to our portfolio reinforces our leadership position in the profitable and fast-growing Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro markets.”

Expresso.Coffee operates more than 1,000 selling points in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, where Sara Lee already has the Pilao, Café do Ponto and Damasco brands. The company has been growing rapidly as the result of a license to sell under the Pilao brand.

Sara Lee is currently dividing into two publicly traded companies by the end of the first half of the year, with the international coffee and tea business being named D.E Master Blenders 1753 and based in The Netherlands.
