Bob Evans Farms consolidates food operations

COLUMBUS, OHIO — Bob Evans Farms, Inc. plans to close its food manufacturing facilities in Springfield, Ohio, and Bidwell, Ohio, by the summer of 2013. The two facilities produce ready-to-eat products such as sandwiches, soups and gravies. In conjunction with the closings, Bob Evans Farms will invest $23 million to $26 million to add production lines to its ready-to-eat foods manufacturing facility in Sulphur Springs, Texas.

Steve Davis, chairman and chief executive officer of the company, said the company’s food division’s strategy is to focus in higher growth opportunities such as packaged side dishes and convenience foods.

“These are difficult, but important strategic decisions for Bob Evans – ones that will allow our company to continue to grow in Ohio and across the country,” Mr. Davis said.

The company expects an annual pre-tax benefit of approximately $7 million to $8 million in fiscal 2015 from the closings.

The company is also in the process of consolidating its transportation centers in Bidwell, Ohio, and Hillsdale, Mich., to a new transportation center in Springfield, Ohio.

Bob Evans Farms also has facilities in Hillsdale, Mich., Richardson, Texas, and Xenia, Ohio, that produce fresh sausage.
