CKE swings to profit in first quarter

CARPINTERIA, CALIF. — Higher sales and price increases helped CKE Restaurant, Inc. post a profit during the first quarter. For the quarter ended May 21, the company had income of $9,509,000, which compared with a loss of $2,601,000 during the same quarter of the previous year.

“Both brands continued to generate positive same-stores sales results during the first quarter,” said Andrew F. Puzder, chief executive officer. “The company has now had seven consecutive quarters of positive blended same-store sales. Hardee’s has now had eight consecutive quarters of positive same-store sales, and Carl’s Jr. posted its fifth consecutive quarter of positive same-store sales.”

The company reported blended same-store sales increased 2.6% during the first quarter as both Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s same-store sales increased 2.6%. During the quarter the company had 1,322 total Carl’s Jr. restaurants and 1,932 total Hardee’s restaurant.
