Green products gain popularity

CHICAGO — As consumers embrace a more conscientious lifestyle, eco-friendly product releases are on the rise, per a new report from Mintel Global New Products Database.

In 2002, the company recorded only five new products launched with an environmentally friendly claim, while 328 products were launched with that claim in 2007. Mintel estimated that nearly 200 million Americans now buy green products.

"More than ever, shoppers want to purchase goods that help protect and preserve the world around them," said Chris Haack, senior research analyst at Mintel. "Manufacturers have responded with everything from recycled packaging to products that maintain the body’s health to entire brands that support environmental causes."

Mintel noted shoppers especially look for eco-friendly food, household paper products and energy efficient appliances. The company also observed a trend in the food sector to display green energy credits or health association support on packaging, in lieu of an organic seal, to court green consumers.
