CHICAGO — According to Information Resources, Inc., sustainability driven consumers and multi-tasking products are among the top product trends that will play a significant role in 2008.
Overall, I.R.I. believes 2008 will be a year of significant opportunities for retailers and manufacturers that listen to consumers directly and through analysis of shopping and purchasing behavior to develop unique products and shopping experiences.
I.R.I. said consumers are increasing their awareness of the environment and the social impact of their purchases, which will drive green, organic, Fair trade and eco-friendly packaged product innovations and options. In addition, consumers are looking for products that cross categories. Other trends include a focus on fresh products with consumers broadening the definition of fresh.
"When it comes to the new and evolving retail environment, the consumer is not only driving the bus, he really owns the bus, too," said Thom Blischok, president of consulting and innovation. "I can think of no other time when it was more important for the C.P.G. industry to act upon the information they are receiving on shopper needs and expressed expectations. Consumers are telling us exactly what they want out of their purchasing experience. Those who listen will prosper. Those who don’t will be left behind."
