Dairy group, N.F.L. look to reduce childhood obesity

CHICAGO — The National Dairy Council and the National Football League have entered into a five-year partnership aimed at getting children to be more active and improve their eating habits. As part of the program, the N.D.C. will spend $100 million during the next five years on a variety of initiatives, including school grants. The group will spend an additional $150 million on other efforts designed to improve the health and wellness of children.

"Kids are our No. 1 resource as a nation and today they are facing a health crisis," said Tom Gallagher, chief executive officer of Dairy Management, Inc., the group that manages the N.D.C. "To help make real sustainable changes we need to offer solutions to our schools that create lasting results."

The program will strengthen the current efforts between the N.D.C. and the N.F.L. Through the program the N.D.C. will become a key partner for the N.F.L. on a league-wide health and wellness initiative.

"We are taking a leadership role to help kids win the battle for good health," said Roger Goodell, N.F.L. commissioner. "Our players know the importance of staying healthy, and it’s important that we help young fans understand the value of exercise."
