Survey: Menu changes influencing consumer behavior

CHICAGO — A law put in place a little less than a year ago mandating calorie disclosure for New York City restaurants is influencing consumer behavior, according to a new survey from food service consultant Technomic, Inc. According to Technomic, 86% of the 750 New York City restaurant-goers surveyed were surprised by the calorie count information now listed on menus and menu boards, with 90% claiming the calorie count was higher than expected. As a result, 82% of those surveyed said calorie disclosure is affecting what they order and 60% said it is affecting what restaurant they eat at. "Consumers find the calorie information on menus to be helpful," said Bob Goldin, executive vice-president for Technomic.
