September red meat production up 1% from year ago

WASHINGTON — Total commercial red meat production for the United States in September was up 1% from the previous year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Livestock Slaughter report.

September commercial red meat production was 4,191.8 million lbs, down 3% from August but up 1% from September 2010, the U.S.D.A. said. January – September red meat production was 36,489.2 million lbs, up 1% from the same period of the previous year.

September beef production was 2,215.4 million lbs, down 7% from August and down 2% from September 2010. Cattle slaughter totaled 2.88 million head, down 1% from September 2010. The average live weight of cattle at slaughter was 1,278 lbs, down 11 lbs from September 2010.

Pork production was 1,953.8 million lbs, up 3% from August and up 4% from September 2010, the U.S.D.A. said. Commercial hog slaughter totaled 9.69 million head, up 4% from September 2010. The average live weight of slaughter hogs was 270 lbs, unchanged from the previous year.

Veal production of 10.7 million lbs was down 5% from the previous year.
