DALLAS — Alan Bernon will become president of the Dean Dairy Group on Jan. 1, Dean Foods Group said on Thursday. Currently the chief operating officer of Dean Dairy Group’s Northeast region and a member of the Dean Foods board of directors, Mr. Bernon will succeed Pete Schenkel, who will become vice-chairman of Dean Foods’ board of directors.
Mr. Bernon, 51, started working at Garelick Farms, Franklin, Mass., in 1976 and became president of the company in 1985. After Dean Foods acquired Garelick Farms in 1997, he became c.o.o. of the Dean Dairy Group’s Northeast region.
Under Mr. Bernon’s leadership, Dean Foods’ Northeast region acquired and assimilated seven dairies, including Tuscan Dairy and Lehigh Valley Dairy Farms. Mr. Bernon will relocate to Dean’s corporate headquarters in Dallas and will continue to serve on the board of directors.
"We are confident that Alan’s 30 years of industry experience, as well as his service to Dean Foods as a board member and regional chief operating officer, make him uniquely qualified to assume leadership of Dean Dairy Group," said Gregg Engles, chairman and chief executive officer of Dean Foods. "He has grown the Garelick business and our presence in the Northeast exponentially, and we believe his expertise will translate effectively to his new role."
Mr. Schenkel, 69, joined Dean Foods in 2000 in connection with the acquisition of Southern Foods Group. Under his leadership, the Dairy Group became the nation’s leading dairy processor and now has more than 100 processing plants nationwide and encompasses more than 50 regional dairy brands.
"We are deeply grateful to Pete for his countless contributions to Dean Foods Co. over the past five years," Mr. Engles said. "Pete has more than 50 years of dairy industry experience and provides unmatched expertise and invaluable leadership for our organization."
