Dannon extends portfolio of probiotic dairy products

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – The expansion of its portfolio of probiotic fresh dairy foods this month will involve three products, The Dannon Co. said Monday.

The company will introduce Activia Light nonfat yogurt to complement Activia, a nonfat yogurt that has gone over $100 million in retail grocery sales since its launch in January 2006. Activia contains the probiotic Bifidus Regularis, which is clinically proven to help regulate the digestive system when eaten daily for two weeks, according to Dannon.

Dannon also will offer a version of Danimals children’s drinks and yogurts with the probiotic LGG (Lactobacillus GG), which has been proven clinically to have positive effects on gastrointestinal function, the function of the immune system and the maintenance of oral health, according to Dannon.

Finally, Dannon will make DanActive available nationwide after testing it in several markets. The dairy drink, which contains the probiotic L. casei Immunitas, has been clinically proven to help strengthen the body’s defenses naturally when consumed daily. DanActive first was introduced in Europe in 1994. Now, more than 6 million bottles of it are consumed daily around the world, according to Dannon.

"The successful launch of Activia in the United States proved to us that Americans are looking for healthier food choices with clinically proven, peer-reviewed functional benefits without sacrificing great taste," said Juan Carlos Dalto, chief executive officer for The Dannon Co., based in White Plains and owned by Groupe Danone. "The nationwide launch of DanActive and Activia Light, as well as the reformulation of Danimals with LGG, takes Dannon’s commitment to high health several steps forward by offering a wider range of great tasting, probiotic fresh dairy products clinically proven to benefit specific natural functions of a healthy body."

A joint Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations/World Health Organization group defined probiotics as "live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host."
