WASHINGTON – The number of shell eggs broken and the production of edible liquid egg products in March decreased slightly from a year ago but increased from a month earlier, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Egg Products report.
Shell eggs broken in March totaled 167,844,000 dozen, down 1% from March 2006 but up 12% from February, the U.S.D.A. said.
March production of edible liquid whole eggs was 142,689,000 lbs, down 1% from a year ago but up 16% from February. Production of liquid whites was 49,652,000 lbs, down 2% from March 2006 but up 2% from February. And output of liquid yolk in March was 26,863,000 lbs, down 5% from last year but up 4% from the previous month.
Production of inedible liquid from shell eggs broken was 19,571,000 lbs in March, up 1% from a year ago and up 14% from a month earlier, the U.S.D.A. said.
For the first quarter of calendar 2007, shell eggs broken totaled 477,692,000 dozen, down 3% from the same period in 2006, the U.S.D.A. said. Edible liquid whole egg production for the quarter was 399,092,000 lbs, down 3% from last year, whites 146,267,000 lbs, down 3%, and yolks 79,110,000 lbs, down 8%. Production of inedible liquid was 56,110,000 lbs, even with last year.
Output of all types of whey protein concentrate, at 35.2 million lbs, was down 7% from last year but up 19.5% from February, the U.S.D.A. said. Stocks of whey protein concentrate on March 31 totaled 25.1 million lbs, down 20% from a year ago and about even with February.
Total lactose outturn in March was 64.8 million lbs, up 4% from March 2006 and up 9% from a month ago. Stocks of all types of lactose were 42.3 million lbs, up 8% from a year ago and up 4% from the end of February.
Butter production in March was 140 million lbs, down 1% from March 2006 but up 4% from a month earlier.
Cheese production totaled 837 million lbs, up 2% from last year and 12% above February 2007.
