June milk production up 1.2% from year ago

WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 14.2 billion lbs in June, which was up 1.2% from the same month of the previous year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Milk Production report (click here to read report).

Production per cow in the 23 major states averaged 1,713 lbs for June, which was 16 lbs more than in June 2006. Additionally, there were 8.29 million head of milk cows in the 23 states, which represented an increase of 19,000 head compared with June 2006 and a 2,000 head increase compared with May 2007.

May milk production was revised to 14.9 billion lbs, which was up 1.1% from May 2006 and up 7 million lbs from last month’s preliminary production estimate.
