Colombian dairy processor to open U.S. facility

MIAMI — Alpina Foods L.L.C., the U.S. subsidiary of Alpina, a Colombian dairy products manufacturer, intends to open a manufacturing plant in Batavia, N.Y. The company plans to invest $15 million in the 28,000-square-foot facility that will manufacture the company’s portfolio of yogurts, desserts and beverages.
“We’ve been waiting for exactly the right moment to make a major push into the U.S. market, and today we found the right location to achieve our strategic goals,” said Carlos Ramirez Zavarce, managing director of Alpina Foods L.C.C. “Alpina will be operating with local dairy farmers, milk cooperatives and vendors along the value chain to enhance our operations. We are very interested in working with local retailers such as Wegmans, Tops and other supermarket chains to introduce ReStart.”
ReStart is Alpina’s branded fat-free yogurt that is made with fruit marmalades and a low-fat, mix-in granola.
Based in Bogota, Alpina has sales of approximately $740 million and nine manufacturing plants in Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador.
