WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 15.3 billion lbs in August, up 2.2% from August 2010, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Milk Production report.

Milk production for July was revised to 15.4 billion lbs, up 0.5% from July 2010 but down 45 million lbs from last month’s preliminary production estimate.

Production per cow in the 23 major states averaged 1,810 lbs in August, up 18 lbs from August 2010, and indicating the drop of 10 lbs per cow in July 2011 from July 2010 may have been a heat-related anomaly. There were 8.47 million dairy cows on farms during the month, which was 102,000 head more than in August 2010 and 3,000 head more than in July 2011.
