CHICAGO — Bel Brands USA plans to build a 170,000-square-foot cheese plant in Brookings, S.D. The company said the investment in the new facility will be approximately $100 million.

Bel Brands manufactures and markets The Laughing Cow cheese and Mini Babybel cheese. The company is owned by Fromageries Bel, Paris, and it has two other facilities in the United States, one in Leitchfield, Ky., and the other in Little Chute, Wis.

“Bel Brands has experienced significant growth over the past few years, and this new plant is essential to expanding our production capacity to meet the growing demand for our Mini Babybel cheeses,” said Lance Chambers, president and chief executive officer of Bel Brands USA.

The facility is scheduled to be fully operational by 2014.
