Service detects melamine in food, drinks

Leatherhead Food International (L.F.I.) has launched a service to detect and test for melamine in food and drink products. The service was validated following a procedure for the quantitative detection of melamine by high pressure liquid chromatography based on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s developmental method.

Two sample matrices have been validated for chocolate and powdered baby food. L.F.I., Leatherhead, United Kingdom, continues to verify the procedure against further matrices.

Melamine-contaminated powdered infant formula has sickened more than 50,000 children and caused at least three deaths in The People’s Republic of China.
