NEWBERG, ORE. — A recall of shelled hazelnuts due to possible Salmonella contamination that was initiated in mid-December has widened and come to include hazelnuts from a variety of companies. On Dec. 17, Willamette Shelling announced it was recalling 114,350 lbs of shelled hazelnuts.

The recall was initiated after Salmonella was found in one production lot. Willamette Shelling decided to recall all shelled hazelnuts processed at its facility from Oct. 12, 2009, through Nov. 25, 2009.

Following the announcement of the Willamette recall several other companies, including Mountain Man Nut & Fruit Co., Parker, Colo.; Whole Foods Market, Austin, Texas; Evonuk Oregon Hazelnuts, Eugene, Ore.; and Market of Choice, also of Eugene, initiated recalls.

To date, no illnesses have been associated with the recalled products. FSM
