White pan bread eases in price, whole wheat rises

WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread eased 0.7c a lb in March, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor. The price of whole wheat bread, meanwhile, continued its climb, rising to a record high.
The national average retail price of white pan bread moved down 0.7c per lb to 116.1c, according to the B.L.S. The March price for white pan bread increased 12.1c compared with March 2006. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread was up 3.3c and 0.5c in the Northeast and Midwest, respectively, but fell 8.6c in the West and 0.7c in the South.
The national average price for whole wheat bread moved up 1.4c per lb to 165.4c. Year over year, the national average price of whole wheat bread was up 29.1c.
The national average price of family flour in March was 35.7c per lb, up 0.1c from February and up 3.1c from March 2006.
The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in March was 91c per lb, up 1.5c from February and up 2.6c from March 2006.
