WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced plans to purchase up to 53.9 million lbs of apple products for the purpose of donating to child nutrition and food assistance programs.
Every year, the Agricultural Marketing Service of the U.S.D.A. purchases various food products for distribution by the U.S.D.A.’s Food and Nutrition Service. These products are used for the national school lunch program, the school breakfast program, the summer food service program, the food distribution program on Native American reservations, the nutrition program for the elderly, the commodity supplemental food program and the emergency food assistance program.
The F.N.S. will survey potential recipients to determine how much of the product will be accepted for shipping. The A.M.S. will work to keep the cost low by inviting bids and awarding contracts.
