May dry dairy product output mostly down from 2006

WASHINGTON — Production of nonfat dry milk, skim milk powders and whey protein concentrate in May were down sharply from a year ago, while dry whey and lactose output were up slightly, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Dairy Products report (click here to read report).

Nonfat dry milk production in May was 116 million lbs, down 13% from May 2006, while output of skim milk powders was 13 million lbs, down 34%. Whey protein concentrate production was 33.5 million lbs, down 10% from a year ago.

But outturn of dry whey was 99.4 million lbs, up 2% from last year. Production of human and animal lactose was 67.1 million lbs, up about 2% also.

Stocks of edible whey powder on May 31 were 44.1 million lbs, down 3% from a year ago, edible whey protein concentrate 23.7 million lbs, down 18%, and total lactose 42.5 million lbs, up 7%.

Butter production in May was 125 million lbs, down about 3% from May 2006. Total cheese production in May was 820 million lbs, about even with last year.

Production of regular hard ice cream was 85.2 million gallons in May, up slightly from a year ago. Low-fat ice cream production was 42.1 million gallons, up 16% from May 2006.
