U.S.D.A. forecasts all wheat output up 18% from 2006

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Agriculture in its latest crop production report forecast 2007 all wheat production at 2,138,252,000 bus, up 326,216,000 bus, or 18%, from 1,812,036,000 bus a year ago. Click here to read report.

The U.S.D.A. forecast production of spring wheat other than durum at 497,648,000 bus, up 37,168,000 bus, or 8%, from 460,480,000 bus a year ago. Of the total, 470,893,000 bus was hard red spring wheat, up 9% from 432,339,000 bus last year, 6,001,000 bus was hard white, down 4% from 6,226,000 bus in 2006, and 20,754,000 bus was soft white, down 5% from 21,915,000 bus a year ago.

Durum production in 2007 was forecast at 78,697,000 bus, up 25,222,000 bus, or 47%, from 53,475,000 bus in 2006.

All winter wheat production was forecast at 1,561,907,000 bus, down 47,772,000 bus, or 3%, from the June forecast of 1,609,679,000 bus but up 263,826,000 bus, or 20%, from 1,298,081,000 bus in 2006.

Hard red winter wheat production forecast at 963,642,000 bus, down 68,103,000 bus, or 7%, from 1,031,745,000 bus in June but up 281,563,000 bus, or 41%, from 682,079,000 bus in 2006.

Soft red winter wheat production was forecast at 363,657,000 bus, up 23,132,000 bus, or 7%, from June but down 26,508,000 bus, or 7%, from 390,165,000 bus in 2006.

Soft white winter production was forecast at 216,491,000 bus, down 1% from June but up 2% from a year ago. Hard white winter wheat production was forecast at 18,117,000 bus, down 820,000 bus, or 4%, from June but up 36% from 2006.

It was the U.S.D.A.’s first survey-based forecasts of the season for durum, other spring and all wheat production. The all wheat and all winter wheat numbers were below analysts’ average pre-report expectations, while durum and spring wheat numbers were just slightly above.

Spring wheat yield was forecast at 39.1 bus per acre, up 5.9 bus from 33.2 bus in 2006. Harvested area was forecast at 12,733,000 acres, unchanged from the June Acreage report but down 8% from 13,878,000 acres last year.

Durum yield was forecast at 36.4 bus per acre, up 6.9 bus from 29.5 bus last year. Harvested area was forecast at 2,163,000 acres, unchanged from the June Acreage report but up 19% from 2006.

Winter wheat yield was forecast at 41.6 bus per acre, down 1.6 bus from June but up 2 bus from 38.7 bus a year ago. Harvested area was forecast at 37,588,000 acres, unchanged from the June Acreage report but up 21% from 31,117,000 acres in 2006.
