July milk production up 3.9%

WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 14.5 billion lbs in July, which was up 3.9% from the same month of the previous year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Milk Production report (click here to read report).

Production per cow in the 23 major producing states averaged 1,743 lbs in July, which was 55 lbs more than in July 2006. Additionally, there were 8.31 million head of milk cows on farms in the 23 states, which represented a 50,000 head increase compared with July 2006 and a 14,000 head increase compared with June 2007.

Milk production for June was revised to 14.2 billion lbs, which was up 1.2% from June 2006 and up 6 million lbs from last month’s preliminary production estimate.
