August milk outturn up 3.6% from year ago

WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 14,332 million lbs in August, which was up 3.6% from the same month of the previous year but down 1% from July 2007, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Milk Production report (click here to read report).

Production per cow in the 23 major producing states averaged 1,721 lbs in August, which was 45 lbs more than in August 2006. Additionally, there were 8.33 million milk cows on farms in the 23 states, which was a 72,000 head increase from August 2006 and an 11,000 head increase from July 2007.

Milk production for July was revised to 14.5 billion lbs, which was up 4% from July 2006 and up 10 million lbs from last month’s preliminary production estimate.
