Average price of white pan bread up, wheat bread falls

WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread moved up 0.1c per lb in August, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor. The price of whole wheat bread, meanwhile, fell back, easing 3.6c. This followed a 1.5c per lb increase in July.

The national average retail price of white pan bread was 121c, according to the B.L.S. The August price for white pan bread increased 12.2c compared with August 2006. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread rose in two regions — West, up 1.7%, and Northeast, up 1.6% — and fell in two regions — South, down 0.8%, and Midwest, down 0.4%.

The national average price for whole wheat bread fell to 171.4c. Year over year, the national average price of whole wheat bread was up 32.8c.

The national average price of family flour in August was 35.5c per lb, up 0.2c from July and up 1.4c from August 2006.

The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in August was 86.8c per lb, down 2.5c from July but up 0.5c from August 2006. Chocolate chip cookies were 265c per lb, down 9.8c from July and down 44.1c from August 2006.
