July nonfat dry milk production up sharply from 2006

WASHINGTON — July production of nonfat dry milk powders was up sharply from a year ago, while production of skim milk powders was down sharply, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Dairy Products report (click here to read report).

Nonfat dry milk production in July was 121 million lbs, up 37% from July 2006, while output of skim milk powders was 19.2 million lbs, down 38%.

Total dry whey production was 95.2 million lbs, up slightly from last year. Production of human and animal lactose was 64.4 lbs, up 7%, and total whey protein concentrate was 33.3 million lbs, down 7% from July 2006.

Butter production in July was 115 million lbs, which was 22% above July 2006 and 5% above June 2007. Total cheese production in July was 795 million lbs, up about 3% from the same month last year.

Production of regular hard ice cream was 86.2 million gallons in July, down 3% from a year ago. Low-fat ice cream production was 40 million gallons, up 6% from July 2006.
