August nonfat dry milk production up sharply

WASHINGTON — August production of nonfat dry milk powders was up sharply while production of skim milk powders was down sharply, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said it its latest Dairy Products report (click here to read report).

Nonfat dry milk production in August was 103 million lbs, up 41% from August 2006, while output of skim milk powders was 17.9 million lbs, down 30%.

Total dry whey production was 94.2 million lbs, up 3% from last year. Production of human and animal lactose was 62.5 million lbs, down nearly 3%, and total whey protein concentrate was 30.1 million lbs, down 14% from August 2006.

Butter production in August was 110 million lbs, which was 24% above August 2006 but 5% below July 2007.

Production of regular hard ice cream was 82.5 million gallons in August, down 8% from the previous year. Low-fat ice cream production was 38.9 million gallons, up 7% from August 2006.
