Price of all wheat increases to $7.16 in September

WASHINGTON — The national average price received by farmers for all wheat in September was $7.16 per bu, up $1.52 from $5.64 in August and $3.10 above the September 2006 average of $4.06, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its September Agricultural Prices report (click here to read report).

If this preliminary price is realized, it would be a record high, the U.S.D.A. said.

The national average price received for winter wheat in September was $7.39, up $1.73 from $5.66 in August and $3.36 above $4.03 in September 2006.

The average price for durum was $7.94 per bu, up $1.06 from $6.88 in August and $3.87 above the September 2006 average of $4.07.

The price for spring wheat other than durum, at $6.62, was up $1.09 from $5.53 in August and $2.51 above the $4.11 average a year ago.

The average price received for rice was $10.30 per cwt in September, up 30c from August and $1.27 above $9.03 in September 2006.

The preliminary index of prices received for food grains in September was 227% of the 1990-92 base of 100, up 23% from 185 in August and 67% above 136 in August 2006.

The September index for feed grains was 148, down 3% from 152 last month but 40% above the September 2006 index of 106. The average price received by farmers for corn in September was $3.19 per bu, down 7c from $3.26 in August but up 99c from $2.20 in September 2006. Farmers received an average of $6.02 per cwt for grain sorghum in September, up 9c from August and up $1.73 from $4.29 a year ago. The average price paid for oats in September was $2.30, up 5c from August and up 60c from September 2006.

The U.S.D.A. index of September prices received for oil-bearing crops was 134, down 3% from 138 in August, but 54% higher than 87 in September 2006. The national average price paid to farmers for soybeans was $8.34, up 62c from August and $3.11 above $5.23 in September 2006. Farmers were paid an average of $9.10 per bu for flaxseed, up 46c from July and $3.64 above $5.46 in September 2006. The average price paid for sunflowerseed was $18.10 per cwt, up 20c from August and up $6.40 from September 2006. The average price paid for canola was $15.90 per cwt, $1.30 above $14.60 in August.

The preliminary September index for all crops was 144, up 2% from 141 in August and 19% above 121 in September 2006.
