October milk outturn up 4.1% from year ago

WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 14.2 billion lbs in October, which was up 4.1% from the same month of 2006, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Milk Production report (click here to read report).

The gain from a year ago was the largest year-over-year percentage increase since March 2006 and reflected increases of at least 3% since July 2007.

Production per cow in the 23 major producing states averaged 1,699 lbs for October, which was 47 lbs more than October 2006. Additionally, there were 8.35 million milk cows on farms in the 23 states, which was a 98,000-head increase from October 2006 and a 13,000-head increase from September 2007.

Milk production for September was revised to 13.7 billion lbs, up 3.1% from September 2006 and a 10 million-lb increase from the month’s preliminary production estimate.
