August egg product output up 1% from 2008

WASHINGTON — The total amount of liquid product from shell eggs broken in August was 221,972,000 lbs, down 2% from July but up 1% from the previous year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Egg Products report.

August production of edible whole eggs was 139,116,000 lbs, down 2% from the previous year; liquid whites were 54,226,000 lbs, up 5%; liquid yolks were 28,630,000 lbs, up 7%; and inedible product was 18,580,000, down 3%.

Edible liquid product produced for the January-August period was 1,737,286,000 lbs, down 2% from the same period of the previous year, the U.S.D.A. said. Liquid whole eggs totaled 1,096,485,000 lbs, down 3%; liquid whites were 423,012,000 lbs, down 1%; liquid yolks were 217,789,000 lbs, down 3%; and inedible products were 146,652,000 lbs, down 5%.

Shell eggs broken in August totaled 171,809,000 dozen, down 2% from the previous month but up 1% from the previous year. Shell eggs broken in the January-August period totaled 1,331,619,000 dozen, down 2% from the same period of 2008.
