October egg products down 8% from 2008

WASHINGTON — The total amount of liquid product from shell eggs broken in October was 226,173,000 lbs, up 2% from October but down 8% from the previous year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Egg Products report.

October production of edible whole eggs was 146,643,000 lbs, down 8% from the previous year; liquid whites were 52,433,000 lbs, down 8%; liquid yolks were 27,097,000 lbs, down 5%; and inedible product was 19,242,000 lbs, down 7%.

Edible liquid product produced in the January-October period was 2,184,300,000 lbs, down 3% from the same period of the previous year, the U.S.D.A. said. Liquid whole eggs totaled 1,385,317,000 lbs, down 4%; liquid whites were 528,161,000 lbs, down 2%; liquid yolks were 270,822,000 lbs, down 4%; and inedible products were 183,964,000 lbs, down 6%.

Shell eggs broken in October were 172,326,000 dozen, up 1% from the previous month but down 6% from the previous year. Shell eggs broken in the January-October period totaled 1,674,089,000 dozen, down 3% from the same period of 2008.
