WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 14.6 billion lbs in December, down about 1% from the same month of 2008, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Milk Production report.
In December, production per cow in the 23 major producing states averaged 1,758 lbs, which was 29 lbs above the December 2008 average. Additionally, there were 8.31 million dairy cows on farms in the 23 states in December, which was 206,000 head less than in December 2008 but unchanged from November 2009.
Milk production for November was revised to 14 billion lbs, up 24 million lbs from last month’s preliminary production estimate but down 1% from a year earlier.
For the full year, milk production totaled 175.3 billion lbs, down slightly from 175.9 billion lbs in 2008 as the number of milk cows declined but output per cow increased.
