WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 13.643 billion lbs in February, up 19 million lbs from February 2009, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Milk Production report. Although slight, it was the first year-over-year increase in monthly milk production since June 2009.

Milk production for January 2010 was revised to 14.831 billion lbs, up 14 million lbs from the preliminary estimate but down 71 million lbs from January 2009.

Production per cow in the 23 major states averaged 1,640 lbs in February, up 35 lbs from the February 2009 average. There were 8,318,000 dairy cows on farms in the 23 states during the month, which was 168,000 head less than in February 2009 but was 3,000 head more than in January 2010, the U.S.D.A. said.
