March milk production up 1%

WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 15.4 billion lbs in March, up 1% from March 2009, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Milk Production report.

Milk production for February 2010 was revised to 13.7 billion lbs, up slightly from February 2009 and up 17 million lbs from the preliminary production estimate.

Production per cow in the 23 major states averaged 1,846 lbs in March, up 51 lbs from the March 2009 average. There were 8.32 million dairy cows on farms during the month, which was 162,000 head less than in March 2009 but 1,000 more than in February 2010, the U.S.D.A. said.

Milk production during the January – March quarter was 47.3 billion lbs, down slightly from the same quarter of the previous year.
