April milk production up 2%

WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 15.2 billion lbs in April, up 2% from April 2009, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Milk Production report.

Milk production for March 2010 was revised to 15.4 billion lbs, up 1% from March 2009 and up 9 million lbs from the preliminary production estimate.

Production per cow in the 23 major states averaged 1,823 lbs in April, up 63 lbs from the April 2009 average. There were 8.33 million dairy cows on farms during the month, which was 155,000 head less than in April 2009 but 3,000 more than in March 2010, the U.S.D.A. said.
