March output of most dairy products up from 2009

WASHINGTON — March production of nonfat dry milk, dry whey, lactose, whey protein concentrate and cheese were up from a year ago but butter output was down, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Dairy Products Report.
Edible nonfat dry milk production was 137,517,000 lbs, up 17% from February but up just slightly from 137,301,000 lbs in March 2009. Output of skim milk powders was 27,626,000 lbs, up 25% from February and up 13% from a year ago. Manufacturers’ stocks of edible nonfat dry milk on March 31 totaled 147,861,000 lbs, down 2.5% from Feb. 28 and down 22% from March 31, 2009. Manufacturers’ shipments on nonfat dry milk in March totaled 139,823,000 lbs, up 42% from February but down 1% from March 2009.
Total March production of dry whey was 93,614,000 lbs, up 13% from March 2009, lactose was 74,372,000 lbs, up 25%, whey protein concentrate was 36,302,000 lbs, up 3%, and dry buttermilk was 7,277,000 lbs, up 26%.
Total manufacturers’ stocks on March 31 of dry whey were 50,402,000 lbs, up 13% from the previous year, of lactose were 66,458,000 lbs, down 22%, of whey protein concentrate were 38,411,000 lbs, up 4%, and of dry buttermilk were 9,941,000 lbs, up 91%.
Butter production in March was 141,073,000 lbs, up slightly from 141,052,000 lbs in February but down 4% from March 2009.
Production of all types of cheese in March totaled 890,144,000 lbs, up 15% from February and up 2% from the previous year.
Production of regular hard ice cream totaled 79,825,000 gallons, up 6% from the previous year. Low-fat ice cream production was 40,582,000 gallons, up 13% from March 2009.
