Meat, butter stocks down from 2009

WASHINGTON — Frozen stocks of red meat, poultry and butter on April 30, 2010, were down from a year ago, but stocks of cheese and eggs were up, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Cold Storage report.

Frozen red meat stocks on April 30, 2010, totaled 878,920,000 lbs, down 5% from March and down 16% from the previous year, the U.S.D.A. said. Total frozen beef stocks were 373,313,000 lbs, down 3% from March and down 9% from the previous year. Frozen pork stocks totaled 482,524,000 lbs, down 6% from March and down 21% from the previous year. Frozen pork belly stocks were 50,229,000 lbs, down 15% from March and down 37% from April 2009.

Turkey stocks totaled 422,198,000 lbs on April 30, up 11% from March but down 26% from April 30, 2009, and total chicken stocks were 623,924,000 lbs, up 1% from March but down 5% from last year. Total frozen poultry supplies were 1,049,873,000 lbs, up 5% from March but down 15% from the previous year, the U.S.D.A. said.

Butter stocks at the end of April were 207,578,000 lbs, up 6% from March but down 14% from April 2009.

Total natural cheese stocks were 1,011,658 lbs, up 2% from March and up 8% from April 2010.

Total frozen egg stocks on April 30, 2010, were 22,540,000 lbs, up 4% from March and up 24% from April 2009. Stocks of egg whites were 3,568,000 lbs, down 13% from March but up 22% from April 2009. Frozen egg yolk stocks were 524,000 lbs, down 11% from March and down 48% from April 2009. Whole and mixed egg stocks came in at 5,943,000 lbs, up 7% from March 2010 but down 20% from April 2009. Unclassified eggs totaled 12,505,000 lbs, up 10% from March and up 81% from 2009.

Total frozen vegetable stocks (excluding potatoes) were 1,793,059,000 lbs, down 9% from March but up 4% from April 2009. Stocks of frozen french fries were 890,552,000 lbs, up 1% from March but down 9% from the previous year.

Stocks of all types of frozen fruit totaled 974,346,000 lbs, down 4% from March but up 6% from the previous year.

Stocks of frozen orange juice concentrate were 1,377,466,000 lbs, up 6% from March but down 3% from April 2009.

Fresh apples in regular and controlled storage totaled 1,933,187,000 lbs, down 26% from March and down 8% from April 2009.
