April nonfat dry milk production up 8%

WASHINGTON — March production of nonfat dry milk was up 8% from the previous year but production of skim milk powders was down 41%, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Dairy Products Report.
Nonfat dry milk production was 152,217,000 lbs, up 11% from March and up 8% from April 2009. Output of skim milk powders was 14,463,000 lbs, down 48% from March and down 41% from the previous year.
Manufacturers’ stocks of edible nonfat dry milk on April 30 totaled 144,412,000 lbs, down 2% from March 31 and down 20% from April 2009.
Total dry whey production was 90,777,000 lbs, down 2% from March but up 9% from April 2009. Production of lactose was 71,630,000 lbs, down 3% from March but up 23% from April 2009. Dry buttermilk outturn was 6,560,000 lbs, down 9% from the previous month but up 23% from the previous year.
Total manufacturers’ stocks of dry whey on April 30 were 52,673,000 lbs, up 25% from the previous year, including 50,358,000 lbs for human use, up 22%, and 2,315,000 lbs for animal use, up 109%.
Total lactose stocks were 73,543,000 lbs on April 30, down 1% from the previous year. Whey protein concentrate stocks totaled 38,001,000 lbs, up 4% from the previous year. Dry buttermilk stocks were 8,271,000 lbs, up 108% from a year ago.
Butter production in April was 138,636,000 lbs, down slightly from March and down 3% from April 2009.
Cheese production in April totaled 862,817,000 lbs, down 3% from March but up 2% from April 2009.
Production of regular hard ice cream totaled 78,496,000 gallons, down 1% from the previous year. Low-fat ice cream production was 38,514,000 gallons, up 10% from April 2009.
