May milk production up 1.3%

WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 15.7 billion lbs in May, up 1.3% from May 2009, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Milk Production report.

Milk production for April 2010 was revised to 15.2 billion lbs, up 1.8% from April 2009 and up 14 million lbs from the preliminary production estimate.

Production per cow in the 23 major states averaged 1,889 lbs in May, up 55 lbs from the May 2009 average. There were 8.33 million dairy cows on farms during the month, which was 143,000 head less than May 2009 but 4,000 more than in April 2010.
