July milk production up 3%

WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 15.3 billion lbs in July, up 3% from July 2009, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Milk Production report.

Milk production for June 2010 was revised to 15.2 billion lbs, up 23 million lbs from last month’s preliminary estimate and up 2.9% from June 2009.

Milk production in the 23 major states during the first six months of 2010 totaled 90 billion lbs, up 1% from the same period a year ago. Production has increased from a year ago in every month this year with the exception of January, and has been increasing at a faster rate in most consecutive months.

Production per cow in the 23 major states averaged 1,830 in July, up 59 lbs from the July 2009 average. There were 8.37 million dairy cows on farms during the month, which was 26,000 head less than in July 2009 but 19,000 head more than in June 2010.
