August butter, pork stocks down sharply from 2009

WASHINGTON — Stocks of butter and pork, especially pork bellies, in freezers on Aug. 31 were down sharply from a year earlier, but frozen egg, chicken and cheese supplies were up from year-earlier levels, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Cold Storage report.

Frozen pork stocks on Aug. 31 totaled 384,853,000 lbs, down 2% from July and down 27% from August 2009, the U.S.D.A. said. Frozen pork belly stocks were 6,890,000 lbs, down 68% from July and down 86% from a year earlier. Beef stocks in freezers totaled 385,226,000 lbs, down 1% from July and down 8% from August 2009. Total frozen red meat supplies were 797,723,000 lbs, down 1% from July and down 19% from August 2009.

Total chicken stocks were 695,409,000 lbs, up 4% from July and up 8% from August 2009. Frozen turkey stocks totaled 496,604,000 lbs, down 1% from July and down 24% from August 2009. Total frozen poultry supplies were 1,197,165,000 lbs, up 2% from July but down 8% from August 2009, the U.S.D.A. said.

Total frozen egg stocks at the end of August were 24,691,000 lbs, equal to levels in July and up 9% from August 2009. Stocks of egg whites were 3,147,000 lbs, down 7% from July but up 8% from August 2009. Frozen egg yolk stocks were 597,000 lbs, down 4% from July and down 54% from the previous year. Whole and mixed egg stocks came in at 7,257,000 lbs, up 7% from July but down 24% from August 2009. Unclassified egg stocks totaled 13,690,000 lbs, down 2% from July but up 56% from a year earlier.

Aug. 31 butter stocks were 151,839,000 lbs, down 22% from July and down 42% from the previous year. Total natural cheese stocks on Aug. 31 were 1,034,097,000 lbs, down 2% from July but up 4% from August 2009, the U.S.D.A. said.

Frozen vegetable stocks totaled 2,254,054,000 lbs, up 21% from July and up 3% from August 2009. Stocks of frozen French fries were 823,536,000 lbs, down 1% from July and down 9% from the previous year.

Stocks of all types of frozen fruit totaled 1,101,947,000 lbs, down 2% from July and down 12% from August 2009.

Aug. 1 stocks of frozen orange juice concentrate were 1,132,483,000 lbs, down 8% from July and down 14% from a year ago.

Fresh apples in regular and controlled storage on Aug. 31 were 135,402,000 lbs, down 71% from July and down 4% from the previous year.
