December chicken, egg, cheese, red meat stocks up

WASHINGTON — Chicken, egg, cheese and red meat stocks in freezers on Dec. 31, 2010, were higher than year-earlier levels, but turkey and butter stocks were lower, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Cold Storage report.

Total chicken stocks on Dec. 31, 2010, were 790,552,000 lbs, up 4% from November and up 25% from December 2009, the U.S.D.A. said. Frozen turkey stocks totaled 187,895,000 lbs, up 8% from November but down 28% from December 2009. Total frozen poultry supplies were 980,940,000 lbs, up 4% from November and up 9% from December 2009, the U.S.D.A. said.

Frozen egg stocks on Dec. 31, 2010, totaled 25,355,000 lbs, up 11% from November and up 7% from December 2009. Stocks of egg whites were 1,951,000 lbs, down 27% from November and down 22% from December 2009. Frozen egg yolk stocks were 1,141,000 lbs, up 35% from November and up 12% from the previous year. Whole and mixed egg stocks came in at 6,528,000 lbs, up 11% from November but down 6% from December 2009. Unclassified egg stocks totaled 15,735,000 lbs, up 16% from November and up 20% from December 2009.

Natural cheese stocks on Dec. 31, 2010, totaled 1,026,207,000 lbs, up 2% from November and up 6% from the previous year. Dec. 31, 2010, butter stocks were 81,923,000 lbs, up 17% from November but down 38% from December 2009.

Total frozen red meat supplies on Dec. 31, 2010, were 941,322,000 lbs, up 2% from both the previous month and year. Frozen pork stocks on Dec. 31, 2010, totaled 475,637,000 lbs, up 2% from November and up 1% from December 2009. Frozen pork belly stocks were 50,883,000 lbs, up 35% from November but down 10% from December 2009. Beef stocks in freezers totaled 446,614,000 lbs, up 3% from November and up 4% from December 2009.

Frozen vegetable stocks totaled 2,354,187,000 lbs, down 6% from November and down 5% from December 2009. Stocks of frozen french fries were 831,091,000 lbs, down 9% from November and down 2% from December 2009.

Stocks of frozen orange juice concentrate on Dec. 31, 2010, were 809,659,000 lbs, up 2% from November but down 32% from December 2009. Stocks of all types of frozen fruit on Dec. 31, 2010, totaled 1,165,242,000 lbs, down 8% from November and down 12% from the previous year.

Fresh apples in regular and controlled storage on Dec. 31, 2010, totaled 4,571,594,000 lbs, down 13% from November and down 7% from the previous year, the U.S.D.A. said.
