December milk production up 2.8%

WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 15 billion lbs in December, up 2.8% from December 2009, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Milk Production report.

Milk production for November was revised to 14.4 billion lbs, up 3.1% from November 2009 and an increase of 8 million lbs from last month’s preliminary production estimate.

Production per cow in the 23 major states averaged 1,794 lbs in December, up 33 lbs from the December 2009 average. There were 8.39 million dairy cows on farms during the month, which was 74,000 head more than in December 2009 and 15,000 head more than November 2010.

For the year, including the preliminary December data, milk production in the 23 major states totaled 179 billion lbs, up 2.1% from 2009. Total U.S. 2010 milk production was 192.7 billion lbs, up 1.8% from a year earlier.
