January chicken, cheese, red meat stocks up

WASHINGTON — Chicken, cheese, red meat and egg stocks in freezers on Jan. 31, 2011, were higher than year-earlier levels, but turkey and butter stocks were lower, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Cold Storage report.

Total chicken stocks on Jan. 31, 2011, were 778,259,000 lbs, down 3% from December but up 23% from January 2010, the U.S.D.A. said. Frozen turkey stocks totaled 254,212,000 lbs, up 33% from December but down 16% from January 2010. Total frozen poultry supplies were 1,036,268,000 lbs, up 4% from December and up 11% from January 2010.

Natural cheese stocks on Jan. 31, 2011, totaled 1,051,724,000 lbs, up slightly from December and up 7% from the previous year. January 2011 butter stocks were 118,926,000 lbs, up 46% from December but down 29% from January 2010.

Total frozen red meat supplies on Jan. 31, 2011, were 1,017,900,000 lbs, up 8% from both the previous month and year. Frozen pork stocks on Jan. 31, 2011, totaled 540,908,000 lbs, up 14% from December and up 10% from January 2010. Frozen pork belly stocks were 51,319,000 lbs, up 1% from December but down 4% from January 2010. Beef stocks in freezers totaled 460,238,000 lbs, up 3% from December and up 8% from January 2010.

Frozen egg stocks on Jan. 31, 2011, totaled 26,787,000 lbs, up 6% from December and up 10% from January 2010. Stocks of egg whites were 3,795,000 lbs, up 82% from December and up 10% from January 2010. Frozen egg yolk stocks were 1,162,000 lbs, up 10% from December and up 33% from the previous year. Whole and mixed egg stocks were 7,832,000 lbs, up 21% from December and up 6% from January 2010. Unclassified egg stocks were 13,998,000 lbs, down 11% from December but up 11% from January 2010.

Frozen vegetable stocks totaled 2,103,096,000 lbs, down 11% from December and down 9% from January 2010. Stocks of frozen French fries were 878,118,000 lbs, up 7% from December but down 2% from January 2010.

Stocks of frozen orange juice concentrate on Jan. 31, 2011, were 834,642,000 lbs, up 3% from December but down 35% from January 2010. Stocks of all types of frozen fruit on Jan. 31, 2011, totaled 1,059,651,000 lbs, down 9% from December and down 14% from last year.
