January milk production up 2.7%

WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 15.2 billion lbs in January, up 2.7% from January 2010, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Milk Production report.

Milk production for December was revised to 15 billion lbs, up 2.7% from December 2009 and a decrease of 17 million lbs from last month’s preliminary production estimate.

Production per cow in the 23 major states averaged 1,813 lbs in January, up 29 lbs from the January 2010 average. There were 8.4 million dairy cows on farms during the month, which was 82,000 head more than January 2010 and 14,000 head more than December 2010.
