February chicken, cheese, red meat stocks up

WASHINGTON — Chicken, cheese, red meat and egg stocks in freezers on Feb. 28, 2011, were higher than year-earlier levels, but turkey and butter stocks were lower, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Cold Storage report.

Total chicken stocks on Feb. 28, 2011, were 715,405,000 lbs, down 7% from January but up 14% from February 2010, the U.S.D.A. said. Frozen turkey stocks totaled 296,396,000 lbs, up 17% from January but down 13% from February 2010. Total frozen poultry supplies were 1,016,602,000 lbs, down 1% from January but up 4% from February 2010.

Natural cheese stocks on Feb. 28, 2011, totaled 1,035,974,000 lbs, down 2% from January but up 4% from the previous year. February 2011 butter stocks were 138,656,000 lbs, up 17% from January but down 32% from February 2010.

Total frozen red meat supplies on Feb. 28, 2011, were 1,062,361,000 lbs, up 4% from January and up 13% from the previous year. Frozen pork stocks on Feb. 28, 2011, totaled 578,064,000 lbs, up 7% from January and up 12% from February 2010. Frozen pork belly stocks were 51,242,000 lbs, down slightly from levels in January and down 8% from February 2010. Beef stocks in freezers totaled 467,681,000 lbs, up 1% from January and up 16% from February 2010.

Frozen egg stocks on Feb. 28, 2011, totaled 26,187,000 lbs, down 2% from January but up 9% from February 2010. Stocks of egg whites were 3,239,000 lbs, down 15% from January and down slightly from February 2010. Frozen egg yolk stocks were 2,123,000 lbs, up 83% from January and up 231% from February 2010. Whole and mixed egg stocks were 7,103,000 lbs, down 9% from January but up 9% from February 2010. Unclassified egg stocks were 13,722,000 lbs, down 2% from January and nearly equal with February 2010 levels.

Frozen vegetable stocks totaled 1,928,585,000 lbs, down 9% from January and down 10% from February 2010. Stocks of frozen french fries were 899,128,000 lbs, up 2% from January but down 1% from February 2010.

Stocks of frozen orange juice concentrate on Feb. 28, 2011, were 1,231,794,000 lbs, up 3% from January but down 27% from February 2010. Stocks of all types of frozen fruit on Feb. 28, 2011, totaled 951,980,000 lbs, down 10% from January and down 15% from the previous year.
