February milk production up 2.4%

WAHSINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 14 billion lbs in February, up 2.4% from February 2010, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Milk Production report.

Milk production for January was revised to 15.2 billion lbs, up 2.5% from January 2010 and a decrease of 21 million lbs from last month’s preliminary production estimate.

Production per cow in the 23 major states averaged 1,666 lbs in February, up 24 lbs from the February 2010 average. There were 8.4 million dairy cows on farms during the month, which was 81,000 head more than in February 2010 but no change from January 2011.
